There is a lot of interest in today’s culture about the idea of Persona and the psychological mapping of one’s inner world. In fact, the interest is so strong that the superstar Korean Pop band, BTS, has taken Dr. Murray Stein’s concepts and woven them into the title and lyrics of their latest album, Map of the Soul:Persona.
What is our persona and how does it affect our life’s journey? What masks do we wear as we engage those around us? Our persona is ultimately how we relate to the world. Combined with our ego, shadow, anima and other intra-psychic elements it creates an internal map of the soul.
T.S. Eliot, one of the most famous English poets of the 20th Century, wrote that every cat has three names: the name that everybody knows, the name that only the cat’s intimate friends and family know, and the name that only the cat knows. As humans, we also have three names: the name that everybody knows, which is the public persona; the name of that only your close friends and family know, which is your private persona; and the name that only you know, which refers to your deepest self. Many people know the first name, and some people know the second. Do you know your secret name, your individual, singular, unique name? This is a name that was given to you before you were named by your family and by your society. This name is the one that you should never lose or forget. Do you know it?

Afterword
"Love yourself, love the world, know your name" As RM of BTS said those words in his address to the United Nations, he touched on a challenge everyone has to face. Knowing your true name, not the given one the world gives you or the intimate one your loved ones give you is a deeply personal experience that may be difficult even with your very best effort. This journey to integrate your true self into conscious understanding may take a life's work to do, but it's never too late to start. When you can understand yourself you can love yourself! It's fantastic that there is a band that can spread awareness of Jungian concepts like BTS does. This was one of my first experiences with Jungian literature and I encourage anyone who's interested to check it out.And above all, remember to love yourself, love the world, and know your name!Know your true name to love yourself! I was introduced to this book after listening to Kim Nam Jun's speech to the United Nations. I was so impressed with the speech that I listened to the latest album from BTS, which I noticed had the same name as a book I had heard of. I was pleased to discover that Dr. Stein had updated his guide to the soul with this work. As I read I realized the book could function as a guide to the development of self-knowledge, knowledge of others, and self-love. These eternal themes are no doubt what drew RM's attention to the book, as they are some of the same themes BTS expresses in their music. Indeed, these ideas are significant for us all.The book is titled "Map of the Soul" and it provides exactly that. Dr. Stein gives us a names and a common language to discuss the internal environment of the soul and its relation to the external world. I found the discussion of the relationships between the self that is known to us and the self that we present to the world, or our persona, particularly intriguing. Dr. Stein describes the persona as the mask we show the world and gives us strategies for negotiating a good relationship between who we are and what the world sees. That really resonated with me.I couldn't help but think back to RM's speech to the United Nations where he talks about the relationship between how he knows himself and how others know him. He said that his heart stopped when he started seeing himself only through the eyes of others and then he could no longer see the stars. That made sense to me on a personal level. I went through a period where I lost touch with myself. Thankfully I found my way back. When reading this book, it stuck me how much of what Dr. Stein discusses was familiar to me from my own journey back to myself. This book provided me with a common language to describe how I found the path back to myself, how I was able to reconcile who I am with how others see me. Discovering this helped me to feel more connected with both myself and the world.I encourage everyone to take the time to read a little of this book. I believe an introduction is available for free from the publisher, Chiron Publications, at no cost. It might be the beginning of your journey back to your true self. Once you learn your true name, the you that lies behind the mask, you may find it easier to love yourself. I have.
