Deceiving sample/beginning Saw this on a buzz feed article about fun summer reads and it being a great rom-com style book. It wasn't.The two characters were mildly interesting, but their "relationship development" was a span of 2 months of weekend sex trips. It only bothered me because in the "sample" and even the build up of the wedding, there was such promise of a cute story, but then you got past their first hookup and it was like the author didn't know what else to do besides have them bone down for 75% of the book. Also, the text fighting and juvenile fighting packed depth and believability to the romatic notion that these two characters would be together. The Perfect Rom-Com Read Fun, frothy rom-com read that would make a delightful movie. (Admit I've been dream casting it in my head ever since I finished reading it. Think I mentally settled on Chris Pine and Nicole Beharie for the leads. Make it happen, Hollywood!)From the moment Alexa and Drew meet cute in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his wedding date for the weekend, sparks fly between the poised political operative and hunky pediatrician. As their cross-California romance goes from faux to fabulous, the two see if there's more to their relationship than just a couple wild weekends.Devoured this on vacation and it's the perfect beach read. Smart, funny, a little bit sexy (but not graphic), and just a truly delightful summer, or anytime, read. And while it's undeniably light reading, it also has stuck with me long after most modern romances have totally faded from memory. Jasmine Guillory is a true find and I can't wait to read what she has coming out next. (It's THE PROPOSAL, another fun-as-heck sounding romance, which I've already pre-ordered.)Pure comfort reading, feel-good fiction for stressful times Alexa is the chief of staff for the mayor of San Francisco; Drew is a pediatric surgeon in L.A. Sparks fly when they're trapped in an elevator together, and Drew invites Alexa to be his date for a weekend wedding. She's looking to break out of a dating slump and agrees to go; they end up having a wonderful time and a long distance romance begins. But as they grow closer, will either of them admit that it's more than just a fling?I will say two good things and one criticism about the book. The first good thing: it is a joy to read, like sipping hot chocolate, warm and sweet and goes down easy. In this tumultuous time we're living in, that goes a LONG way; it is pure comfort reading. The writing is funny and effortless. I never wanted to stop reading, and I felt satisfied when it was done. The second good thing is how much I enjoyed reading a book with two professionally accomplished leads. They both have challenging careers, and they both care about their work and are good at it. We see both of them in professional settings, thinking about their work, stressing about things that matter. Alexa is trying to fund an arts program for at-risk teenagers, and Drew has a kid who's not recovering well after surgery. They also both have broad social circles filled with interesting, good people. I really enjoyed reading a book in which the characters are essentially all role models. Alexa in particular is a well drawn character, with relatable insecurities and a sharp, funny way of looking at the world. Drew is a bit more generic, but he's still a good guy.And this brings me to the criticism -- there isn't any real conflict. Drew is commitment phobic, and tends to dump women after a few months; and Alexa is worried about getting attached to him. But this doesn't ever go anywhere. I always find it irritating when the big conflict of the book could be resolved if either character would just talk to the other one. What's a little stranger is that there is potential for real conflict here. Alexa is black and Drew is white, and beyond that, Ms. Mallory does talk about the white privilege that Drew enjoys, and there is one instance where he makes a somewhat uninformed remark about her youth program. I'm curious why she didn't build more conflict around that -- not around racial issues, particularly; I liked that they were inter-racial. But why not build conflict that is more original and specific to who these people are, and the work they do? At one point Ms. Mallory mentions in passing that they have to learn how to adapt to two difficult and challenging careers; that is also an interesting conflict, rarely explored, and these are two characters who could handle it.There's part of me that enjoyed a book in which nothing bad happens, but it also was a little odd that this is a book in which nothing much happens: two attractive, likable, accomplished people meet, fall in love, and.... the end, basically! All that being said -- it was warm, and sweet, and comforting, and funny, and I'm on board for all of that. A good read that deserves to be read.(And P.S. just to back up what Roxane Gay said in her 5-star review: it is very funny how much they ate. I guess since they weren't fighting, and they couldn't have sex ALL the time, they needed something else to do, so they ate constantly -- donuts, waffles, burgers, burritos, more donuts, more donuts. It was kind of hysterical.)

Title: Artificial Intelligence Pdf Confronting the Revolution

The robots are coming - but they probably don't look anything like you expected...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to revolutionize your life. Will it cost you your job, or give you a new career? Will it isolate or liberate you? Will it lead us all into a new type of war, or save us all from sickness?

The truth is that nobody knows, yet. But the AI revolution is fast approaching, and the world has little time to prepare. But prepare we must, because, as James Adams and Richard Kletter explain in Artificial Intelligence: Confronting the Revolution, what mankind has set in motion cannot now be undone - and it's going to change everything.

In this ground-breaking work, Adams and Kletter clearly explain the potential and likely ramifications of AI. They show how ill-prepared we are for the forthcoming "fourth industrial revolution" and look at how human beings might fare as it unfolds. Meticulously researched and extensively referenced, this audiobook to the brave new world is created by two highly credible authors, who use all of their experience, insight, and contacts to give listeners a privileged look into that which is to come. This is surely a 'must read' for anybody who takes an interest in current affairs and social history, as well as those with an interest in technology.

James Adams is a former Sunday Times journalist and entrepreneur and a former Board Member of the National Security Agency who has worked with the CIA and the White House on issues including cyber security, warfare (including cyber warfare), espionage, and terrorism.

Richard Kletter has been a Research Associate at Stanford focused on new communications technology, an adjunct professor at USC where he consults for the DOD lab, The Institute For Creative Technology. He co-holds mobile software patents and ran a web content company funded by leading tech companies.

Fabulous insight and ideas A fabulous book full of well-researched information that is fresh and relevant. I enjoyed reading the book but also took away many insightful ideas and concepts that I can use now and in the future. This is a must read right now book.Riveting! This riveting book shines a bright light on the myriad ways AI will impact our lives, in some cases for the good, but in other that should keep us up at night.A Critically Important Book to Read to Prepare for What's to Come Adams and Kletter bring us an easy to understand yet comprehensive look into what our future will look a lot like. IT covers many of the manifestations of what we will see emerge over the next 1-2 decades and is unfolding right now before our eyes if we know what to look for. This book helps us be better prepared for the inevitable. It is well written, easy to grasp and a fascinating story.

Title: Punishment Without Crime Pdf How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal
A revelatory account of the misdemeanor machine that unjustly brands millions of Americans as criminals

Punishment Without Crime offers an urgent new interpretation of inequality and injustice in America by examining the paradigmatic American offense: the lowly misdemeanor. Based on extensive original research, legal scholar Alexandra Natapoff reveals the inner workings of a massive petty offense system that produces over 13 million cases each year. People arrested for minor crimes are swept through courts where defendants often lack lawyers, judges process cases in mere minutes, and nearly everyone pleads guilty. This misdemeanor machine starts punishing people long before they are convicted; it punishes the innocent; and it punishes conduct that never should have been a crime. As a result, vast numbers of Americans -- most of them poor and people of color -- are stigmatized as criminals, impoverished through fines and fees, and stripped of drivers' licenses, jobs, and housing.

For too long, misdemeanors have been ignored. But they are crucial to understanding our punitive criminal system and our widening economic and racial divides.

A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2018

Important Work I often like to start the year reading something light and positive, but this year I did the opposite. Reading [book:Punishment Without Crime: How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal|39834671], I felt that I was reading something important, which I hope will get people thinking about ways to improve our misdemeanor system. As [author:Alexandra Natapoff|3001070] states:"Misdemeanors .....are the chump change of the criminal system. They are labeled “minor,” “low-level,” and “petty.” Sometimes they go by innocuous names like “infraction” or “violation.” Because the crimes are small and the punishments relatively light in comparison to felonies, this world of low-level offenses has not gotten much attention. But it is enormous, powerful, and surprisingly harsh. Every year, approximately 13 million people are charged with crimes as minor as littering or as serious as domestic violence.3 Those 13 million misdemeanors make up the vast majority, around 80 percent, of the nation’s criminal dockets. Most arrests in this country are for misdemeanors. Most convictions are misdemeanors."I have recently been hearing about people being jailed for failure to pay fines and thought to myself "this can't be right we don't have debtors prisons in this country." So when I saw that Punishment Without Crime was being released and critics were acclaiming it, I thought that I should read it as well and get down to the bottom of the story. It was indeed eye-opening as I confess to being quite ignorant of the whole misdemeanor system which is enormous and according to Natapoff anything but just:"As legal scholar Jonathan Simon puts it, “The whole structure of misdemeanor justice… seems intended to subject the urban poor to a series of petty but cumulative blows to their dignity as citizens of equal standing.”38"Natapoff has done her homework. This work has been thoroughly researched and is annotated throughout. She is also clear in her descriptions and explanations so that a lay person can understand the law and what is happening easily.Natapoff explains how the misdemeanor system effects the disparities of race and wealth, how it frequently tramples our constitution, how it has become privatized, and causes negative life changing impacts. In the final chapter she cautiously lays out how it could be changed for the better.I will admit to being pretty ignorant of this part of our justice system and am happy to have read this book.distressing and revelatory Exposes the self-serving practices of our predatory criminal court systems. Finally someone understands This system has been in place my entire life and I am 65. I have been to jail and prison several times in my life back in the 70's and 80's and the system was unequally applied then and it is now. Poor minorities, and even back then the people I was in jail with schooled me that it was all about the money. I remember being 20 years old and in the county jail wondering why everyone coming is with pathetic crimes like speeding or failing to appear on a parking ticket were not able to bail out. I just didn't understand what it meant to be poor. All my crimes were possession of drugs crimes, and I didn't realize how many people were simply dirt poor. It's just another kind of debtors prison. Probation is another money maker for the government. The whole thing is predatory. And the poor are the prey.

Call the Midwife Pdf

ISBN: B009899R76
Title: Call the Midwife Pdf A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times

Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London's East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city's seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history. Beautifully written and utterly moving, Call the Midwife will touch the hearts of anyone who is, and everyone who has, a mother.

Beautifully Written- Just as Delightful as the TV Series!! Most reviewers seem to think that it is their job to outline the plot of the book that they are reviewing. I'm not going to do that. What I am going to do is tell you that I am an avid reader. I am 69 years old and I read about 3 books a week. Sometimes more. I have now read all three of Jennifer Worth's books and I have found all of them to be outstanding! If you're like me, you will learn an incredible amount about Post-War life in the lower East side of London. I had no idea that such abject poverty existed there during my lifetime. When I was little, whenever the bills came in, my father would always moan, "Off to the poor house!" I had not a clue that there really were such things, nor could I have imagined the horrors that they held within. Worth writes eloquently about life before the Pill, the Polio vaccine, and indoor plumbing. All things that we take for granted.I can't imagine a novel being any more captivating than these memoirs. The characters all come alive--they literally seem to leap off the pages and you can almost smell the streets of the lower East side as the midwives furiously pedal to assist their next mother-to be. I think what amazed me the most was the quality of the writing. Often memoirs are ghost-written, or they are interesting but the writing is amateurish. In this case, the author is one of the midwives and I have to say that her writing is as good as any accomplished author. Her stories are mesmerizing, heart-wrenching, at times humorous, but always beautifully written. Jennifer Worth died recently and I am so sorry that I never had the chance to write to her and tell her how much I loved her books.Fascinating memoir of life as a midwife This was a choice for our book club. We all agreed this was a significant book. Jennifer Worth was a trained midwife in England, and writes of people she knew, and her experiences, using pseudonyms.. She includes details that inform the reader about the history of this profession, life in the workhouse, and the nursing professionals convent where she lived. This is a memoir of actual experiences, so the character sketches are even more fascinating. It is not a novel, but short stories of specific people or situations. Humor, candor, and history make this a most enjoyable read. It is not for the faint of heart as there are graphic descriptions of medical situations. This is the first of 3 volumes of Call the Midwife. A PBS series is based on her books.A heartwarming, fascinating book! If you enjoy the television series based on this book, you must read the source material. If you haven't watched the series, I still recommend this for its humanity and insight. Some of the characters are a bit rougher around the edges here than their TV counterparts, and some situations end a bit differently than in the series, but on the whole, the book is a wonderful look at a way of life that is long past. The way people lived in this area of London seems absolutely primitive to us today, yet the crowded homes with few amenities, and families with half a dozen or more children were routine. Take a step back in time and see what being a midwife in post-WW II England was like!

Title: The Wayward Sons (Book 2) Pdf Starlee's Turn
After speaking up for Dexter and then yanked from the only place she's ever felt at home, Starlee is lost.

Lost without George to make her laugh.
Lost without Jake's strong arms.
Lost without Charlie's calming presence.
Lost without Dexter's intensity and determination.

No one is okay with this situation. No one is willing to give up.

Not Starlee and certainly not the Wayward Sons.

Starlee's Turn is the second installment in the Wayward Son's series. It's a WhyChoose young adult romance.

Getting better! I love Starlee and her boys. It was great to see her experience the usual high school activities and interact with other seniors. And of course deal with the added drama of the uber mean girl who thinks she has a right to Jake as her HOCO King to her Queen. As if. This ends on a cliffhanger again so hopefully the next one comes out soon. Enjoy! 💚💜💛💙Love It Starlee takes a big risk by running away from home. I think it was a good move for her, though. The guys certainly appreciated it. Starlee grows closer to each of the guys and we actually get to know Charlie better in this book. Too bad a jealous somebody comes along to mess things up. How will they get past it?Wayward Sons: Starlee's Turn The Wayward Sons: Starlee's Turn, is book two of the Wayward Sons series. Very interesting turn in the series, and the surprises don't stop through the whole book. I love these characters and the emotional bond between them. The storyline and subplots keep the action moving, and the reader engaged. Can't wait for book three, as this book ended with a new plot twist.

The taxation of multinational corporate groups has become a major concern in the academic and political debate on the future of international taxation. In particular the arm’s length standard for the determination of transfer prices is under increasing pressure. Many countries and international bodies are now taking a closer look at the use of transfer prices for profit shifting and are exploring alternative mechanisms such as formulary apportionment for the allocation of taxing rights. With regard to this topic, this volume is the first to offer a concise analysis of transfer pricing in the international tax arena from an interdisciplinary legal and economic point of view. Fundamentals such as the efficient allocation of resources within multi-unit firms and distortions between different goals of transfer pricing as well as different aspects of it in tax and corporate law, the traditional OECD approach and practical aspects concerning intangibles, capital and risk allocation are covered by outstanding authors.
