Pema Chödrön is an American Buddhist nun in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa and resident teacher at Gampo Abbey in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in North America. She is the author of numerous best-selling books, including When Things Fall Apart, Start Where You Are, and The Wisdom of No Escape.
The best-selling author and spiritual teacher shares practices for living with wisdom and integrity even in confusing and uncertain situations.
Is it possible to live well when the very ground we stand on is shaky? Yes, says everyone's favorite Buddhist nun, it's even possible to live beautifully, compassionately, and happily on shaky ground—and the secret is: the ground is always shaky. Pema shows how using a traditional Buddhist practice called the Three Vows or Three Commitments, offering us a way to relax into profound sanity in the midst of whatever non-sanity is happening around us. Just making these simple aspirations can change the way we look at the world and can provide us with a lifetime of material for spiritual practice.
The Three Commitments are three methods for embracing the chaotic, uncertain, dynamic, challenging nature of our situation as a path to awakening. The first of the commitments, traditionally called the Pratimoksha Vow, is the foundation for personal liberation. This is a commitment to doing our best to not cause harm with our actions or words or thoughts, a commitment to being good to each other. It provides a structure within which we learn to work with our thoughts and emotions, and to refrain from speaking or acting out of confusion. The next step toward being comfortable with groundlessness is a commitment to helping others, traditionally called the Bodhisattva Vow. It is a commitment to dedicate our lives to keeping our hearts and minds open, and nurturing our compassion with the longing to ease the suffering of the world. The last of the three commitments, traditionally known as the Samaya Vow, is a resolve to embrace the world just as it is, without bias; a resolve to see everything we encounter, good and bad, pleasant and painful, as a manifestation of awakened energy. It is a commitment to see everything and anything as a means by which we can awaken further.
Highly recommended accessible book This the first book I have read related to Buddhist philosophy. I have read books on mindfulness but this is different. I went to a Buddhist service and it was recommend by a guest speaker who also is a well known author. I am reading a little bit at a time and trying to take the time to understand and absorb it. It is pretty easy to read. I appreciate how the author deals with the everyday issues that we all face. She makes you think about things you have always accepted in your life and if this is the best way to think. It may not be! I recommend it to anyone who wants to think about their tendency to worry, feel anxious/depressed and feel like they need to control everything in their life. I know I have a long way to go here, but am making the first steps.A beautiful work to return to again and again This book is one of those I can imagine myself rereading over and over for the rest of my life. I also can see myself recommending so much of it to future therapy clients. There are so many nuggets of wisdom offered either as ancient teachings or the author’s own person anecdotes. Each section is easily read as a stand alone chapter or as a progression of all previous chapters so the reader can be reminded of what they need based on the subject. My favorite aspect we’re the “guided meditations” at the end of each chapter. I loved reading the theory but the suggestions of how to put it into practice is invaluable. Guaranteed my meditation practice and hopefully my entire life view will be changed by this book.Best of the best I have a number of Pema Chodron books, and this is one of the best. There is something about the simplicity of the message--delivered in few words, but with maximum impact. Some call it a quick read; I disagree. Each sentence is powerful, each chapter to be read and re-read. I have passed this book on to my husband, and we have both read it several times. I have also come back here to buy more copies for friends, family, and co-workers. We all go through difficult and confusing times, and we often resist change as "bad." Pema's reassuring voice lets us know that we are not alone; that we all suffer at one time or another because we try to grasp at permanency, and often wish that things were different from how they currently are. The solution, both simple and difficult, is to live in the present moment, without pre-conceptions, and to let go of our story line about what is "good" or "bad" for us at any given moment. So I read, and re-read, and slowly--the message sinks in. The chapter on compassion is one of the most powerful things I have ever read. I think I have given away 10 copies of this book already.
