"Leah and Ezra have built a powerful network of folks ready to fight for justice and inclusion...In times of division, they've been a constant force for good."--Ayanna Pressley, U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district "Time 100 ""The breakout star of the new activists"--The Economist"Indivisible has played a leading role in turning out voters at congressional town halls to voice their opposition."--The New York Times"If Democrats are able to retake the House in 2018, it will be a victory built from Greenberg and Levin's blueprint."--Politico Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin are the co-authors of the Indivisible Guide and co-Executive Directors of Indivisible, where they lead a national staff in Washington DC and across the country supporting the Indivisible movement in advocacy, elections, and grassroots organizing. The two have been listed in the Politico 50 list, GQ’s 50 Most Powerful People in Trump’s Washington and Roll Call’s People to Watch in 2019. Leah was a human trafficking policy advocate before joining the office of Congressman Tom Perriello on Capitol Hill. Working for a progressive in the red fifth district of Virginia at the rise of the Tea Party, she saw firsthand the power that organized constituent power could have—and she took notes. After Perriello’s loss in 2010, she returned to human trafficking policy—until the 2016 election, when she started writing a quick guide to constituent power with her spouse Ezra.Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg are the co-authors of the Indivisible Guide and co-Executive Directors of Indivisible, where they lead a national staff in Washington DC and across the country supporting the Indivisible movement in advocacy, elections, and grassroots organizing. The two have been listed in the Politico 50 list, GQ’s 50 Most Powerful People in Trump’s Washington and Roll Call’s People to Watch in 2019. Before Indivisible, Ezra was a congressional staffer and anti-poverty advocate. He started out working on local homelessness issues, and during the late Bush II and early Obama eras he served as a senior legislative and campaign staffer for Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX). He escaped Capitol Hill and spent a few years as a think tanker and advocate, writing papers on progressive tax policy that Leah begrudgingly edited and trying to get Congress to listen about anti-poverty reforms.

“If Democrats are able to retake the House in 2018, it will be a victory built from Greenberg and Levin’s blueprint.” —Politico

The centerpiece of a robust new grassroots machinery.” —Rolling Stone

This is a story of democracy under threat. It’s the story of a movement rising up to respond. And it’s a story of what comes next.

Shortly after Trump’s election, two outraged former congressional staffers wrote and posted a tactical guide to resisting the Trump agenda. This Google Doc entitled “Indivisible” was meant to be read by friends and family. No one could have predicted what happened next. It went viral, sparking the creation of thousands of local Indivisible groups in red, blue, and purple states, mobilizing millions of people and evolving into a defining movement of the Trump Era. From crowding town halls to killing TrumpCare to rallying around candidates to build the Blue Wave, Indivisibles powered the fight against Trump—and pushed the limits of what was politically possible.

In We Are Indivisible: A Blueprint for Democracy After Trump, the (still-married!) co-executive directors of Indivisible tell the story of the movement. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at how change comes to Washington, whether Washington wants it or not. And they explain how we’ll win the coming fight for the future of American democracy. We Are Indivisible isn’t a book of platitudes about hope; it’s a steely-eyed guide to people power—how to find it, how to build it, and how to use it to usher in the post-Trump era.

Being Mortal Pdf

ISBN: 1250076226
Title: Being Mortal Pdf Medicine and What Matters in the End

“Wise and deeply moving.” ―Oliver Sacks“Illuminating.” ―Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Beautifully written . . . In his newest and best book, Gawande has provided us with a moving and clear-eyed look at aging and death in our society, and at the harms we do in turning it into a medical problem, rather than a human one.” ―The New York Review of Books“Gawande's book is so impressive that one can believe that it may well [change the medical profession] . . . May it be widely read and inwardly digested.” ―Diana Athill, Financial Times (UK)“Being Mortal, Atul Gawande's masterful exploration of aging, death, and the medical profession's mishandling of both, is his best and most personal book yet.” ―Boston Globe“American medicine, Being Mortal reminds us, has prepared itself for life but not for death. This is Atul Gawande's most powerful--and moving--book.” ―Malcolm Gladwell“Beautifully crafted . . . Being Mortal is a clear-eyed, informative exploration of what growing old means in the 21st century . . . a book I cannot recommend highly enough. This should be mandatory reading for every American. . . . it provides a useful roadmap of what we can and should be doing to make the last years of life meaningful.” ―Time.com“Masterful . . . Essential . . . For more than a decade, Atul Gawande has explored the fault lines of medicine . . . combining his years of experience as a surgeon with his gift for fluid, seemingly effortless storytelling . . . In Being Mortal, he turns his attention to his most important subject yet.” ―Chicago Tribune“Powerful.” ―New York Magazine“Atul Gawande's wise and courageous book raises the questions that none of us wants to think about . . . Remarkable.” ―Peter Carey, The Sunday Times (UK)“A deeply affecting, urgently important book--one not just about dying and the limits of medicine but about living to the last with autonomy, dignity, and joy.” ―Katherine Boo“Dr. Gawande's book is not of the kind that some doctors write, reminding us how grim the fact of death can be. Rather, he shows how patients in the terminal phase of their illness can maintain important qualities of life.” ―Wall Street Journal“Being Mortal left me tearful, angry, and unable to stop talking about it for a week. . . . A surgeon himself, Gawande is eloquent about the inadequacy of medical school in preparing doctors to confront the subject of death with their patients. . . . it is rare to read a book that sparks with so much hard thinking.” ―Nature“Eloquent, moving.” ―The Economist“Beautiful.” ―New Republic“Gawande displays the precision of his surgical craft and the compassion of a humanist . . . in a narrative that often attains the force and beauty of a novel . . . Only a precious few books have the power to open our eyes while they move us to tears. Atul Gawande has produced such a work. One hopes it is the spark that ignites some revolutionary changes in a field of medicine that ultimately touches each of us.” ―Shelf Awareness“A needed call to action, a cautionary tale of what can go wrong, and often does, when a society fails to engage in a sustained discussion about aging and dying.” ―San Francisco ChronicleAtul Gawande is author of three bestselling books: Complications, a finalist for the National Book Award; Better, and The Checklist Manifesto. His latest book is Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. He is also a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, a staff writer for The New Yorker, and a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He has won the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science, a MacArthur Fellowship, and two National Magazine Awards. In his work in public health, he is Executive Director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation, and chairman of Lifebox, a nonprofit organization making surgery safer globally. He and his wife have three children and live in Newton, Massachusetts.

Named a Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post, The New York Times Book Review, NPR, and Chicago Tribune, now in paperback with a new reading group guide

Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming the dangers of childbirth, injury, and disease from harrowing to manageable. But when it comes to the inescapable realities of aging and death, what medicine can do often runs counter to what it should.

Through eye-opening research and gripping stories of his own patients and family, Gawande reveals the suffering this dynamic has produced. Nursing homes, devoted above all to safety, battle with residents over the food they are allowed to eat and the choices they are allowed to make. Doctors, uncomfortable discussing patients' anxieties about death, fall back on false hopes and treatments that are actually shortening lives instead of improving them.

In his bestselling books, Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, has fearlessly revealed the struggles of his profession. Now he examines its ultimate limitations and failures-in his own practices as well as others'-as life draws to a close. Riveting, honest, and humane, Being Mortal shows how the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life-all the way to the very end.

This book could be a game changer This book could be a game changer, if enough people read it and take it to heart. Atul Gawande addresses end-of-life care, and how we're getting it wrong, both within the medical establishment and in our families.Dr. Gawande's book focuses both on medical procedures and living conditions in later life. He addresses the reality that as people near the end of life, decisions about their living situation are primarily aimed at ensuring safety at the expense of retaining autonomy, especially when adult children are making the decisions. "We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we love," a friend tells the author. We mistakenly treat elders as children, Dr. Gawande says, when we deny them the right to make choices, even bad choices. People of any age want the right to lock their doors, set the temperature they want, dress how they like, eat what they want, admit visitors only when they're in the mood. Yet, nursing homes (and even assisted living communities) are geared toward making these decisions for people in order to keep them safe, gain government funds, and ensure a routine for the facility. In addition, Dr. Gawande shows how end-of-life physical conditions are most often treated as medical crises needing to be "fixed," instead of managed for quality of life when treatment has become futile. Life is more than just a stretch of years; it must have meaning and purpose to be worth living, he says. This is a familiar concept (in fact, I read parts of this book in The New Yorker), but he builds a strong case for reform through case studies, stories from his own life, and examples of how individuals are either becoming victims of, or bucking, the system. He addresses assisted suicide only briefly, but he mentions it in relation to end-of-life care. "Assisted living is far harder than assisted death, but its possibilities are far greater as well," he writes. The good news is that some people are doing what they can to improve the well-being of elders nearing the end of their lives. He demonstrates the beauty of hospice care in the home. He tells a great story of a doctor who convinced a nursing home to bring in two dogs, four cats and one hundred birds! It was a risky proposal, but the rewards were phenomenal. It made the place, and the people, come alive. I am aware, though, that these movements rely on individuals, and only if enough people have a vision for change will it come about. For that reason, I hope this book makes a big splash!

Seeking Safety Pdf

ISBN: 1572306394
Title: Seeking Safety Pdf A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (The Guilford Substance Abuse Series)
Author: Lisa Najavits
Published Date: 2002-01-01
Page: 399
This manual presents the first empirically studied, integrative treatment approach developed specifically for co-occurring PTSD and substance abuse. For persons with this prevalent and difficult-to-treat dual diagnosis, the most urgent clinical need is to establish safety--to work toward discontinuing substance use, letting go of dangerous relationships, and gaining control over such extreme symptoms as dissociation and self-harm. The manual is divided into 25 specific units or topics, addressing a range of different cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Each topic provides highly practical tools and techniques to engage patients in treatment; teach "safe coping skills" that apply to both disorders; and restore ideals that have been lost, including respect, care, protection, and healing. Structured yet flexible, topics can be conducted in any order and in a range of different formats and settings. The volume is designed for maximum ease of use with a large format, lay-flat binding, and helpful reproducible therapist sheets and handouts.

See also the author's self-help guide Recovery from Trauma, Addiction, or Both: Strategies for Finding Your Best Self, an ideal client recommendation.

Outstanding program on concrete skills. We are implementing Seeking Safety as the backbone of our inpatient Adolescent Acute Unit. Even with only partial implementation, patients are complimentary of the materials and actively use skills on on the unit. We are excited to complete the process.Excellent manual: informative, explicit, and applicable Excellent treatment manual for treating substance abuse and post traumatic stress disorder. It is true that in my own practice I very frequently see comorbid trauma and substance use. The manual does an excellent job of disseminating information and providing effective treatment methods in a very clear and precise manner. This manual can be easily utilized in practice as a supplement to non-directive therapy. The manual offers 18 (if I remember correctly) group or individually oriented treatment programs as well as comprehensive information regarding the nature of comorbid PTSD and substance use disorders. I would strongly recommend this manual as an entry point into treating individual of all backgrounds, particularly for substance abuse treatment centers.I'm not a professional and can follow this book. My husband is a soldier. A soldier that was getting punished for having PTSD and it's symptoms. I knew something was wrong about that and as I researched I realized he was not alone. The Army does not treat them together. My research led me to Seeking Safety. I was worried that I would not be able to understand it's language but for the most part I could. I have also been able to use it for my husband who is now recovering better than from any treatment the Army has tried to provide. The only thing I don't care for is the use of AA/NA being stressed. There are other recovery options available that are also successful and not based in religion or having a higher power. So obviously in those areas we just substitute the recovery program of our choice. I have now carried this book to meetings with Officers that can affect change in the system hoping that it will catch on and they will start to use it's model.
